Matthew Sellers Leans on WSFS’ Educational Opportunities to Build a Successful Banking Career
A tough economy led Matthew Sellers to a job in banking, but the culture at WSFS and the opportunity to help Customers inspired him to turn that job into a career that has spanned 12 years with the Bank.
“I was working as an office manager in the land surveying industry, but in 2009 the economy fell out and I needed to find something new,” said Sellers, Vice President and Retail Office Manager at the Millsboro Banking Office in Delaware.
In a classic case of ‘mom knows best,’ Sellers’ mother recommended he look into a career in banking after having worked in the industry herself for more than two decades.
“I’ve been in Delaware my whole life, so I knew WSFS was the local Bank and had seen they were active in the community, so I said, ‘let me try and get an interview with them,’” he said. “I was fortunate to land a role as a Personal Banker. I had zero banking experience, but WSFS provided great training and opportunities to learn and grow.”
Having been familiar with the Bank, Sellers thought it seemed like a great place to work, and would soon find out firsthand.
“Since landing that first role with WSFS, I’ve been able to expand my skillset and knowledge, and have held just about every retail banking role between Personal Banker and my current position as Retail Office Manager,” he said. “I’ve really taken a liking to working with Customers, problem solving and helping them with their financial outlook.”
Sellers has found the emphasis on continued education at WSFS to be a key selling point for his own career.
“WSFS does a great job in always providing an opportunity to learn and grow,” he said. “There are so many avenues to better yourself at the Bank, and I’ve been fortunate to have great leaders who have really motivated me to be my best and have helped me get where I want to go in my career.”
In addition to the focus on education, Sellers has found the culture and collaboration at the Bank to be something he loves.
“I’ve worked here for 12 years now, and the culture is something special,” he said. “I truly feel like I’m part of a team. The Bank cares about each of its Associates and allows them to be at the forefront in helping to make key decisions.”
“Culture to me is big and that’s why I think people stay,” he added. “We get work done, but we’re having fun while doing it. They give each Associate the opportunity to do what they do best every day.”
Sellers has also enjoyed the opportunities he’s had to make a difference in the lives of WSFS’ Customers.
“Banking is all Customer-focused,” he said. “You have the chance to change peoples’ lives for the better with the solutions you provide for their unique needs. Every contact you make, you have a chance to change their financial future and that’s pretty awesome. That’s what I like about my job every day.”
